A New Bike this Christmas?

Get fit & save money in 2019 with the Gemelli Cycle to Work Scheme

Bikes and Christmas were made for each other – few other things manage to combine excitement and practicality in equal measures. Using a bike to commute makes a lot of sense – it’s fun, relatively inexpensive and a great way to stay healthy. If it’s something you’ve been thinking about but not got around to yet, our Cycle to Work scheme is just the incentive you need to get in the saddle.

Cycle to Work is a Government initiative to encourage more people to use bikes as a greener way to travel to and from work. The scheme operates on a salary exchange basis, which means an employee can select to exchange part of their salary to cover the cost of a bike and safety accessories up to a value of £1,000 – without having to pay Tax or National Insurance on the value. It means you can save up to 42% on the cost of a brand new bike and/or accessories. What’s more, you can spread the payments over 12 or 18 months.

Get a new bike from wherever you like...

Getting your bike couldn’t be easier. You simply select the model you want – from the cycle retailer of your choice, and Gemelli will take care of everything else – from completing the paperwork, liaising with your supplier and organising delivery!

Benefits to Employees

  • Save up to 42% on a bike and accessories
  • Spread cost over 12 or 18 months
  • Use bike supplier of your choice
  • Improve health and fitness levels

New Deadline for Childcare Vouchers

Childcare Voucher Scheme...NEW deadline

The Government recently announced that its new Tax-Free Childcare scheme will be introduced in a phased process throughout 2017/18. To be eligible to qualify for this new scheme, which will initially only include children under 5 years, both parents have to be working. The Government propose to extend the age limit to include children under 12 years within the first twelve months.  Once the new Tax-Free Childcare scheme is introduced parents will not have the option of joining the current Childcare voucher scheme.

The current Childcare Vouchers scheme was set to close to new registrants on 5th April 2018. However, on March 13th the Education Secretary announced the decision to extend the Childcare Voucher scheme for a further six months. The date by which parents must register for the existing scheme has not yet been confirmed but it is thought that the deadline date will be sometime in October 2018. Parents who are signed up for Childcare Vouchers before this new deadline will have the choice of either continuing to take childcare vouchers or switch to the new scheme if they wish (subject to staying with the same employer and not taking an unpaid career break of longer than a year). Take a look at the current scheme versus the new scheme and see which scheme suits you best. Don’t miss out on the chance of registering for Childcare Vouchers.

There’s Still Time to Register for Childcare Vouchers…

The two schemes are different, and which one is best for a parent will depend on their personal circumstances. • Vouchers can be used for children up to and including15 years old – 16 years if registered disabled.
  • Vouchers can be used to pay for day, weekly and termly boarders, holiday clubs, nurseries, nannies, child-minders, and breakfast and after-school clubs as well as tutoring. Childcare providers must be registered with, and regulated by the appropriate authorities.

  • Parents can choose to pay as little as £10 per month into the scheme.

  • Vouchers can be backdated to the beginning of the current tax year *(April 2017), and parents can select to use as little or as much of their allowance as they wish to. (Subject to certain criteria*)

Employee Assistance Programme

Banish blue Mondays all year round with Employee Assistance...

It’s not surprising that many of us find ourselves feeling a bit flat in January, like a glass of prosecco with the fizz gone out of it. The parties are over, the decorations are down, it’s back to work, back to reality, and the miserable weather and thud of credit card bills landing on the doormat do little to lift spirits.Things aren’t helped either by the fact that since 2005, the third Monday of January has come to be designated ‘Blue Monday’, after psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall produced an equation identifying it as the most depressing day of the year. Even though Arnall’s equation was revealed to be a PR stunt, and there’s no scientific evidence that this year’s Blue Monday (15th January) will be different to any other day, there’s no doubt that at this time of year generally, people are especially susceptible to feeling down. The cold dark days of mid-winter can affect health and mood; in the workplace, the busy pre-Christmas period can put extra pressure on managers and staff; while at home, the holiday season can exacerbate relationship issues and concerns over money. Of course, the reality is that life can throw up all kinds of challenges at any time. But with Gemelli’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), free support and advice is available for a wide range of practical and emotional issues all year round.

How the Gemelli Employee Assistance Programme Works

Our employer-paid benefit is a highly cost-effective way for employers to help their staff deal with virtually any problem they might find themselves facing at home or at work. By giving staff access to a telephone service they can call 24/7 to get free, impartial advice and counselling on issues in strictest confidence, this benefit helps to maintain and improve workforce health, well-being and productivity. Areas covered by our EAP include:

These are just some of the areas covered – employees can contact their EAP for support on anything that matters to them. While all information is treated in strictest confidence, our EAP can also supplement an organisation’s HR function, providing invaluable generic data to inform management where action or training may be required.

Holiday Exchange

Extra Holiday when it’s needed with our Holiday Exchange Scheme
Employers are increasingly recognising the benefits of offering staff more flexible ways of working, to help them balance the responsibilities of work with the demands of home, family – and life generally. Solutions like flexi-time and home-working are commonplace, addressing the fact that one size no longer fits all, allowing staff to fit their life around their work – and creating a more productive and loyal team at the same time. But what about the traditional fixed annual holiday allowance? For any number of planned or unexpected reasons, an employee’s personal leave requirements can change from year to year, with the result that, from time to time, their contracted holiday allowance may not be sufficient for their needs. The Gemelli Holiday Exchange Scheme give staff increased flexibility over their holiday allowance, enabling them to exchange part of their salary for additional days if they need them. As well as helping staff manage those occasional work-life challenges, the scheme boosts workplace motivation, and both the employee and their employer save money.

How the Scheme Works
Operating on a salary exchange basis, the Gemelli Holiday Exchange Scheme gives employees the option to extend their contracted holiday allowance by using part of their salary to purchase additional days. The scheme gives employees increased flexibility to accommodate a wide range of events that would otherwise take them over their fixed holiday allowance, such as getting married, moving house, a once in a lifetime holiday, or visiting family overseas. It can also benefit employees who find they need to take time out for an unexpected reason part-way through the year, but don’t have sufficient holiday entitlement remaining to enable them to do so. Tax and National Insurance savings mean employees can reduce the cost of purchasing unpaid leave by up to47%, and can spread the cost over 12 months, while their employer saves on payroll costs and Employer’s National Insurance contributions.

Example Employee Saving
The following examples show the savings for 2 employees – one a basic rate tax payer, the other a higher rate tax payer, who opt to take an additional 5 days leave, paying for it over 12 months:

Basic Rate Tax Payer
Salary: £30K
Gross cost of leave: £574.70
Net cost of leave: £390.84
Tax and NI Savings: £184.86
Higher Rate Tax Payer
Salary: £40K
Gross cost of leave: £766.25
Net cost of leave: £444.48
Tax and NI Savings: £321.77

Benefits to Employers

Simple to introduce into businesses of any size
Can be tailored to fit a company’s holiday allowance policy and business needs
Demonstrates a commitment to flexible working, helping attract the best staff
Increases motivation levels & engenders loyalty
Contributes to reduced absenteeism

Benefits to Employees

Gives option to purchase additional holiday if needed
Increases flexibility to be able to plan for special events – or to deal with the unexpected

Health and Wellbeing

Gemelli Healthcare & Wellbeing Benefits

Up until a few years’ ago, if an employer provided any kind of workplace healthcare benefit for their staff, it was most likely to be private medical insurance – designed to support an employee in the event they became ill. More recently though, as employers increasingly recognise the benefits of a healthy, happy workforce, a growing number are introducing a broader range of solutions to support all aspects of their employees’ health, with wellbeing initiatives increasingly at the centre of healthcare strategies. Other factors are also helping to make workplace wellness a key priority for organisations, including a general focus on healthy living, later retirement, and awareness of mental health issues and the effects of stress.Research conducted in July 2017 among readers of www.employeebenefits.co.uk provides some interesting insights into the key trends and issues shaping employee health and wellbeing strategies within organisations,

84% of respondents believe their organisation has a duty of care to encourage employees to achieve a sensible work-life balance
47% have placed a greater focus on communicating healthcare benefits over the last 12 months
44% are likely to increase the number of healthcare benefits their organisation offers over the next 12 months
38% currently have an integrated wellness strategy that incorporates physical emotional mental and financial well being
42% currently have strategies in place to reduce sickness absence
67% have specific benefits and initiatives to support employee mental health

Top reasons for providing healthcare benefits

74% - to boost overall employee wellbeing and employee engagement
72% - to be seen as employer of choice
64% - a desire to support employees
50% to reduce sickness absence
45% - because their competitors’ offer them
44% - because staff want them

Top things healthcare benefits helped employers achieve

74% - being seen as a ‘caring’ employer
68% - improving the health & welfare of staff
57% - good employee engagement
53% - getting employees back to work as soon as possible

Gemelli Benefits to Support All Aspects of Employee Health & Wellbeing

At Gemelli, we offer a diverse range of health-related benefit schemes that enable employers to create bespoke benefit packages addressing all aspects of employee health and wellbeing. Ranging from employer-paid to salary sacrifice schemes, our solutions are flexible and simple to introduce into organisations of any size, delivering outcomes that include increased productivity and reduced absenteeism.

Gemelli Health Screening Scheme

Our health screening scheme gives employees access to comprehensive health screening at significantly reduced costs. As well as helping to identify pre-existing health problems or medical conditions early, the scheme provides employees with advice and recommendations on healthy living. Health screening gives employees complete peace of mind, and contributes to a healthier workplace, reducing short-term and long-term absenteeism due to sickness.

Gemelli Health Cash Plans

Health cash plans make healthcare more affordable for employees, providing cashback for a range of everyday healthcare costs, including dental, optical, chiropody, physiotherapy, alternative therapies and specialist consultations. Employers offering cash plans create a positive differential that can aid recruitment, motivation and retention – and help reduce levels of absenteeism due to sickness and stress. Gemelli can offer plans from as little as £1.35 per employee per week, with no medical or GP referral required.

Gemelli Employee Assistance Programmes

Gemelli’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) enables employees (and immediate family members), to access impartial advice and counselling on work and non-work related issues in strictest confidence. Employees can access professional support and advice on a wide range of emotional problems such as relationship worries, difficulties at work, bereavement, stress, anxiety and depression, and get practical, legal and financial advice on money matters, divorce, parenting, consumer rights, career options, training, and more – helping to prevent work related stress.

Gemelli Private Medical Insurance

Employee absenteeism can have a huge impact on a business, and a Private Medical Cover scheme can avoid lengthy sickness absences and high business costs caused by staff having to wait for treatment on the NHS.  Although private health cover can’t eradicate sickness absence, it can help get employees back to work more quickly, because they won’t have to join an NHS waiting list.

Gemelli Cycle to Work Scheme

Cycle to Work is a Government initiative designed to encourage anyone living close enough to their workplace or a station, to use a bike rather than their car. Gemelli’s self-financing Cycle to Work scheme is a great way for companies to demonstrate their commitment to improving both the environment, and the health of their workforce. The scheme enables employers to help staff enjoy all the health benefits that go with cycling for less, by allowing them to exchange part of their salary to cover the cost of a brand-new bike – without having to pay Tax or National Insurance on the value.

Gemelli Gym Membership Scheme

Regular exercise can do more than just improve physical fitness; it can help to boost the immune system, reduce stress levels, and contribute to better mental health. The next best thing to giving employees access to a workplace gym is to provide them with discounted gym membership through Gemelli’s Gym Membership scheme. Simple and easy for businesses of any size to implement, it’s one of our most popular benefits, enabling employers to give their staff access to discounts of up to 20% on membership at thousands of gyms and health clubs right across the UK.

Salary Exchange Changes

Rule Changes to Salary Exchange Schemes, Your Questions Answered.

In his Autumn Statement, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced the government’s intention to make changes to rules on the way that some salary exchange schemes are taxed. Salary exchange schemes (also known as salary sacrifice schemes) provide companies with a way to enhance staff remuneration and lifestyle, improve morale, and create a real workplace differential without impacting on payroll. With rising inflation set to put pressure on both business and household budgets, many employers will be keen to understand the new rules coming into effect on 6th April 2017. A consultation process is ongoing, and final details are still to be confirmed, but we already know much of the important information.

To help employers and employees understand the impact of the new rules, our short Q&A provides answers to some key questions:

Q Will the rule changes affect all existing schemes?

A No. It’s important to recognise that not all schemes will be affected by the new rules. A number of key schemes will remain, continuing to offer tax and NI savings for employees and reducing employers’ NIC payments for the foreseeable future. They are:

  • Childcare Vouchers
  • Cycle to Work
  • Holiday Exchange
  • Ultra-Low Emission Cars (75 co2 and below)
  • Pensions & Pensions Advice

Q Which existing schemes will be subject to the new rules?

Some salary exchange schemes will no longer attract employee tax savings and employers NIC if they’re taken up after 5th April 2017. They are:

  • Health Screening
  • Parking at Work
  • Professional Fees & Subs
  • Save as you Learn
  • Mobiles & Home Tech.

Q What will happen to existing arrangements on schemes subject to the new rules?

A  All existing arrangements on schemes subject to the new rules which are entered into before 6th April 2017 will continue until 5th April 2018 – with the exception of car contracts which will continue until 5th April 2021 - with the full tax and N I savings maintained until these dates.

Q Can employees still register for affected schemes ahead of the deadline?

A Yes. Up until 5th April 2017, employees can still register onto any scheme and take full advantage of the employee tax and NI savings which will apply up to 5th April 2018. Employers NIC savings will also apply up to this date. Important note: Although employees must enter into an arrangement before the April 2017 deadline to qualify for savings, salary deductions do not have to start immediately, so long as a start date is pre-determined.

Q Will the affected schemes still offer any benefits once the new rules apply?

Yes, although affected schemes will no longer attract tax savings once the new rules are applied, salary exchange schemes will continue to offer many benefits to employees. In particular:

  • Savings on National Insurance
  • Ability to spread costs without having to pay any interest
  • Convenience of making regular, predictable payments
  • No up-front costs, credit, insurance or reference checks
  • Access to corporate discounts in some instances

Are You Operating a Gemelli Salary Exchange Scheme Which Will be Subject to the New Rules?

If you’re an employer and you are currently running a Gemelli salary exchange scheme which is going to be affected by the new rules, we’ll be contacting you soon to discuss the options open to you and your employees. If you are concerned the changes may adversely affect staff morale, we can look at the possibility of continuing to operate schemes in a different format, or we can advise you on our range of voluntary and company-paid employee benefits. In the meanwhile, make sure that you and your employees don’t miss out on tax and Employers NIC savings. Contact us now to register onto a scheme before the 5th April 2017 deadline. Call now on 01280 851113, or email us.

Holiday Exchange

A better Work-Life balance with our Holiday Exchange Scheme...
Outside of work, we all lead very different lives. Our reasons for working and what we choose to do with our free time are as individual as we are. Our hobbies, responsibilities and commitments will vary widely, but for each of us, our general well-being, happiness – and our productivity in the workplace, are dependent on getting the balance right between work, and everything else that’s important to us. While we all aspire to this perfect work-life balance, achieving it is not always easy. Demands on our time can fluctuate for many reasons, with the result that the fixed annual leave allowance we receive as part of our package is not always sufficient. The Gemelli Holiday Exchange Scheme offers increased flexibility to employees and business owners, enabling employees to better manage their work-life challenges, improving workplace motivation – and helping both parties to save money.

How does our Holiday Exchange Scheme work?
The scheme gives employees the option to extend their contracted annual leave allowance by purchasing additional days holiday. How any extra days are used is up to the individual; they might choose to use them to spend quality time with their family, or put them towards a special event like taking an extended holiday, getting married or moving house. Operating on a salary exchange basis, employees can save up to 47% in Tax and National Insurance on the cost of buying unpaid leave, and spread the cost across 12 months, while their employer will save on their Tax and National Insurance Contributions.

Cycle to Work

Fitter, greener and save money with Cycle to Work...

The daily commute to work is something most people have to face. It can be expensive – especially if you drive, and while it’s a necessity, it can feel like wasted time.  If you’re lucky enough not to live too far away from your workplace though, there is an alternative way of commuting that will save you money, reduce your carbon footprint and help you keep fit at the same time – cycling. Gemelli’s Cycle to Work scheme makes it easy for anyone to be able to afford a brand new bike and start cycling to work. If it’s something you’ve been thinking about but not got round to, either because you don’t have a bike, or you need to upgrade the one you have – this is the perfect solution for you. Operating on a salary exchange basis, the scheme allows employees to exchange part of their salary to cover the cost of a new bike and cycle safety accessories, up to a value of £1,000 – without having to pay Tax or National Insurance on the amount they choose to spend.

By using the Cycle to Work scheme, you can save up to 42% on the cost of a brand new bike and/or accessories. What’s more, you can spread your payments over 12 or 18 months.

Cycling has never been as popular as it is now. There are more cycle lanes and cycle paths than ever before, and if you’ve not been in the saddle for a few years, you’ll be pleasantly surprised how much bike technology has advanced. Why sit it out in traffic or put up with standing room only on the bus when you could be cruising to work on your bike?

The bike you like from wherever you want...
It couldn’t be simpler. Select the bike you want from the cycle retailer of your choice and leave the rest to Gemelli. We’ll take care of the paperwork, liaise with your supplier and organise delivery.
